Track and Field

Boys’ and girls’ Track and Field both finished first at City Championships on May 19. Led by Biology Teacher and Coach Ed Flynn, the boys earned 220 points, double the amount of the second place winner.

“For the girls, we weren’t expecting to do well, but then they won,” said Flynn.

Coming in first, second, and third for the girls were sophomore Bryn Wallnau, sophomore Kerianne Hensel, and freshman Meredith Tipper, respectively. Also contributing to the victory were Kenya Mollett and Alicia Lee.

Though the boys’ win was expected, their performance was better than their coach anticipated. Junior Ean Disilvio finished one mile in 0:4:31, missing the city record by three seconds. Senior Will Graham completed a high jump of six feet and four inches, and finished first in four events. Senior Darius Moore came in first in two events, and senior Asa Tyree earned one first and one second place medal.

“For the boys, it was a team effort,” said Flynn.

The City Championships consist of sixteen different events, including five field and eleven track.

Their win at City Championships came after a season of success, with the boys earning first place at the annual City Relay Championship. The Relay Championship only includes events that are relays, requiring three people to participate in each field event and four in each track race. The girls came in second at the Relay Championship.

In addition to winning City Championships and City Relay Championships, the boys’ team won every distance event at a City Meet at Oliver High School on May 12.

“I will be deeply saddened to be leaving the track team this year, but it felt good to leave it with a championship,” said senior Adam Hermann.

Though Flynn is retiring after this year, he hopes to continue coaching Cross Country and Track and Field.

“We’ll see how things go,” said Flynn.
