By the time you, dear reader, are reading this the United States Supreme Court will have heard three days of argument over the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. Sometime around June we will receive the verdict that will decide if the country’s largest social project in over seventy years, and President Obama’s largest domestic achievement, will be put into effect. One of the core arguments of the case will be whether or the not the individual mandate, the provision of the law that requires…
Benjamin Schwartz Progress Last year, after I took over the job of editor-in-chief of The Foreword, I set out a list of priorities for the newspaper. A year (and many long hours) later I thought it would be prudent to take a look back on what the newspaper has accomplished during a tumultuous time for Taylor Allderdice High School, the school district, and public education in the United States. At the time, I wrote that under my watch we would produce “a…
Ricardo Llovet-Nava Tardies Tardies: they’ve always been a problem and probably will continue to be for the near future, but the Allderdice administration is trying to change that. Although completely eliminating the problem of daily tardy reports is almost impossible, Allderdice is at least trying to get the number of daily tardies down from around two-hundred. Doing so is no small feat and the administration should be applauded for the attempts it has made so far. Recently, there have been several countermeasures…
Potomac Avenue, off of Route 19 in Dormont, is known for its breakfast. Nestled on the corner of Potomac and Glenmore is the famed Dor-Stop Restaurant, a classic diner with a menu packed with traditional fare. Barely a year ago though, a tiny shop called Sugar Cafe opened a few blocks up the street, facing the challenge of proving that there was room for two hit restaurants on Potomac.
The Porch at Schenley is one of the newest additions to Oakland’s Schenley Plaza, but it has quickly made a name for itself in the three short months that it has been open. The restaurant offers a unique take on the neighborhood bistro, adapting to meet the needs of the local community for every meal of the day.
Everybody has a restaurant that they wish they could rename to more accurately reflect what they personally get out of the establishment, and I’ve found mine. It’s a great, little, do-everything hole-in-the-wall on Forbes Avenue in Squirrel Hill called Pizza Bellino. Reading Bellino’s menu is like running a marathon; I’m always exhausted by the time I get to the end of the 175-item menu (believe me, I just counted). However, as you might expect, I always find myself mired in the hoagie section by the…
Chomp is always one for culture. And by culture, Chomp means ethnic foods and food related traditions. There is not a food festival in Pittsburgh that Chomp has not graced at least once, nor is there a cultural custom that has gone uncelebrated in Chomp’s household. Or so Chomp thought. Strangely, up until this year, Chomp had never experienced the cultural phenomenon of eating Chinese food on Christmas and after realizing this, immediately resolved to do so during the Yuletide. Enlisting the assistance of Mother…
